Practicing is the nuts and bolts of how we become musicians, and how we remain musicians. Why is it called practicing, and not just playing? Playing an instrument simply for enjoyment is a beautiful thing. Notes do not become music, however, without practice.

A practice session has a goal. In order for practice to be effective, it must be repeated frequently. Progress may occur in a wide spiral, rather than an upward line. We notice progress the most when reflecting over a longer time period. The gifts bestowed by practicing are well deserved and hard won, not like gifts that magically appear under the Christmas tree.

Practicing is not a rigid box. It can be flexible to meet the needs of the musician. For the youngest, those who struggle to focus and sit still, it’s amazing what 10 minutes a day can do. It may not be Mozart yet. But if music is something we want everyone to access, then we have to start where each child or individual is.

Even the most accomplished musician may need a refresh on practicing. Maybe a routine has become stale. Sometimes practicing is work by definition (practicing for a competitive audition, for example. I will not be the one to write the book on how to make that fun.) Preparing for an intense orchestral performance, though requiring discipline, is the first part of a process of learning individually, rehearsing together, performing, then finally being on stage for the final applause. It’s part of a meaningful process. That's what gets us through the difficult moments.

The beginner, the advanced student, the professional, we all do the same thing to the best of our ability. We approach the instrument with intention, bringing the focus and skills that we currently have, and gradually expanding them to learn the next piece, or technique, or performance. Everyone will struggle from time to time, but practice plus perseverance is how musicians are made.
